(Vitex) Blue Diddley™ Vitex agnus-castus is one of the most striking summer-flowering shrubs that you can grow. It is virtually maintenance-free, but if you deadhead after blooming, the plant will usually bloom a second time in early fall. When the 10-12 inch purple-blue flower spikes bloom, butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees flock to the plants. Blue Diddley™ is a more compact-growing variety, topping out at 3-6 feet, but can be maintained on the shorter end of the spectrum with pruning after flowering. It isn’t just the flowers of this plant that are striking—the star-shaped leaves are eye-catching as well.
Grow Blue Diddley™ Vitex in full sun in moderately moist soil. You can grow this shrub as a specimen plant or as a mass landscape plant. It is hardy in zones 5-9.
