Sambucus

(Elderberry) Ornamental and Edible Landscaping

Sambucus Elderberry is a stunning ornamental garden shrub with colorful foliage and large summer blossoms. In fall dark purple-red berries are produced that songbirds find irresistible. Sambucus berries may also be harvested and used in making jam or wine. Sambucus Black Beauty™ grows 8-12 feet tall and wide, has almost black leaves, and pink flowers with a light lemon scent. Black Lace™ grows 6-8 feet tall and wide with purple-black foliage that resembles a Japanese maple. The deep color of Sambucus creates great contrast in the landscape.

A deer resistant shrub, Sambucus prefers moist soil and may be planted in full sun to part shade. Pruning is recommended after the flowering season and may be pruned back hard each year to maintain a smaller size plant. Sambucus dies back in northern states (root hardy). Suited for use as a specimen, in containers, hedges, or in mixed beds.
