Description
(New Jersey Tea) Marie Gold® Ceanothus is a native shrub with four-season interest for the garden and landscape. It’s is a deciduous bush with reddish-purple twigs that are attractive during the winter and set off by light green leaves during the summer. Marie Gold® New Jersey Tea grows to a maximum height of 2-4 feet and a spread of three feet and has vibrant gold-yellow fall color. The main attraction, pom-pom shaped pink flowers, emerge in late spring and continue to bloom through the late summer. Once the prolific blooms appear, birds and butterflies will visit the shrub en-masse to sip nectar. After the flowers have passed, colorful seedheads cover the shrub.
Grow Marie Gold® Ceanothus in full sun to partial shade in zones 6-9. It is tolerant of a wide variety of soil conditions, from heavy clay to lightweight loam and performs equally well in wet, dry, or moderately moist soils. (If growing in full sun in warmer areas, provide extra water during dry spells.) Shear the plant after the first bloom to promote a strong second bloom. Other than that, this shrub is relatively maintenance-free.
